ZANU PF loss, more than meets the eye

musekiwafeat.jpg AS A young Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) MP, I recall Webster Shamu coming to sit next to me one sunny afternoon in the Zimbabwe House of Assembly dining room sometime in April 2002.

Shamu who was then MP for Chegutu, representing the ruling Zanu-PF said something to me then that six years later seems to have been a prophecy.

Stating the obvious, he said that, if the Zanu-PF old guard had a policy of renewal, the likes of the late Learnmore Jongwe (then MP Kuwadzana) and Job Sikhala (then MP St Mary’s) and I might not have made it into Parliament. Shamu said the continuous refusal by the old guard to accept the changing times would one day come back to haunt them.

He went further stating that, the biggest problem in Zanu -PF was the people who President Robert Mugabe listens to. As a result, Mugabe was told what those around him thought he wanted to hear most of the time, while those that really know the mood on the ground never got to a chance to communicate anything to the old man, he said.

If the news that Robert Mugabe was told to step down by his colleagues, just before he roped in Jabulani Sibanda, the 37-year-old war veterans leader, who at the time of independence was about nine years old and his war veterans to force his endorsement as Zanu-PF presidential candidate is anything to go by, I am just wondering what those that had advised him against running are thinking today. What about those whose advice Mugabe followed? What is he thinking about them today?

I find it interesting to note that it is only the Bright Matongas (Deputy Information Minister who only became a Zanu-PF MP five years ago and about whom nobody knew anything before then) and the Patrick Chinamasas (Justice Minister who lost an election the only time he has presented himself to the people) that seem to be excited about the current situation. Those in the know view this period as potentially disastrous not only for Zanu-PF as a party but for Mugabe as well.

I recall that Zanu-PF had a plan in place to deal with Mugabe’s succession. According to Amendment 18 of the Zimbabwe’s Constitution (2007), the intention of clauses 2 and 3 was to amend sections 28 and 29 of the Constitution in order to make Senate and the House of Assembly sit as an electoral college and elect a president if a President dies, resigns or is removed from office instead of an election being called within 90 days as was provided for. The composition of the House of Assembly was amended to increase the number of seats from 150 to 210, all of them all elected .The size of the Senate was increased to 93 members.

The delimitation of constituencies, done by the Mugabe’s appointees, the ZEC, came out with revised constituencies which drastically slashed the number of constituencies in the urban areas and the Matabeleland region where they realised the MDC was strong. This clearly favoured Zanu-PF since most of the new seats were allocated to rural constituencies.

Following the unfortunate split of the MDC into two in October 2005, the assumption was that the MDC, led by Morgan Tsvangirai would win the urban seats of Mashonaland, Masvingo and Manicaland while the MDC, led by Professor Arthur Mutambara would get Matebeleland, both urban and rural, and thus effectively dividing the opposition vote equally. This would have left Zanu-PF with rural constituencies in Mashonaland, Masvingo and Manicaland where the majority of the seats had been allocated.

For Mugabe to ensure that everyone was on board with him, his key advisers advised him to hold harmonised elections so that even those that did not want Mugabe but were Zanu-PF would be forced to campaign for him also in the process of campaigning for Zanu-PF MPs, thus ensuring him a chance to win the presidency.

The plan seemed perfect, in the eyes of Zanu-PF, that they even ensured a fairly peaceful pre-election environment as well as agreeing to count and publish vote tallies at the polling stations. The plan was to ensure a Zanu-PF victory through a fairly peaceful but not necessarily free and fair election. In politics however, as has been proven time and time again, no matter how you strategise, plot and conspire, as long as the people are not part of that equation, the plot is bound to fail. Because these strategies did not take into account the people’s interests as well as the issue of Mugabe’s unpopularity, the failure of Zanu-PF in the general elections on March 29 came as no surprise.

I am sure those in Zanu-PF who had seen the light when they advised Mugabe that he was unpopular and was likely to lose if he had gone for this election are now telling the hardliners that; “We told you so.” The problem is that now it is a bit too late to amend things; the people have spoken. The vote for change, the vote for MDC and Tsvangirai has been cast. In spite of any attempts to bury the fact, even the most casual observer can see the overwhelming evidence that the same people who voted on March 29 are likely to vote again in any future election and, in fact, those that did not vote for one reason or another including age, are not likely to vote Zanu-PF.

Zanu-PF is reportedly entertaining ideas of harming or persecuting Morgan Tsvangirai on the assumption that such action will ease their political misfortunes. Such actions are bound to be disastrous and any attempts to harm him will only make him more popular as people will sympathise with him even more. Worse still, the safety of the perpetrators of such a heinous crimes will not be guaranteed in any future inevitable new Zimbabwe.

What also has to be understood in the broader context is that Didymus Mutasa’s “dear old man”, as he described Mugabe, is indeed old. I don’t wish him dead though a lot people wish he was. But it’s a fact of life that at 84, his days are naturally numbered, thus the Zimbabwe solution becomes more urgent than normal.

In his absence and in the absence of a clear front runner to take over Zanu-PF, the likelihood of the party crumbling and the MDC taking total control of the political scene, leaving Zanu-PF just relying on the military and the judiciary, is real. Any politician will know that relying on military power or state institutions like the judiciary has its dangers, especially in the 21st Century; there are enough examples to be cited such as Thailand and Pakistan where such institutions have succumbed to the whims of the majority.

It is unfortunate our learned colleagues in the judiciary and some of our military top brass such as General Chiwenga and his wife Jocelyn as well seem not to realise that the more they exacerbate this problem the more it’s likely to work against them in the very near future.

Surely, one cannot be blinded by patronage not to see such overt evil. It is only prudent for Zanu-PF, the judiciary and the military to realise that there is need not to continue holding the wishes of the people hostage. The defeat of Mugabe and Zanu-PF’s was always inevitable. The wisest course of action for them now is to concede defeat.

One way or the other Mugabe and Zanu-PF will have to come to terms with the fact that the MDC is now the majority political party in Zimbabwe and ‘President’ Morgan Tsvangirai is the most popular politician in Zimbabwe today, and is here to stay. The people’s patience is running out; any attempts by Zanu-PF to prolong this stalemate will merely aggravate the situation.

My own thinking is that at the end of the day, doing the right thing today will give Mugabe a moral high ground in future regardless of the wrongs he has committed in the past. It’s not too late. We are living in constantly changing times, and during this period, some might be tempted to abandon their principles and integrity for the sake of patronage. Let us not find ourselves wanting despite the seemingly unavoidable temptation for power.

The future is in the people of Zimbabwe’s hands and ultimately some people including some of the judges and magistrates whose decisions are only aiding and encouraging injustice will end up paying a very expensive price when the time comes. Time will tell.

Tafadzwa Musekiwa is a former student leader and former MDC Member of Parliament for Zengeza, he writes from the United Kingdom.

  2. Tafadzwa go back home, do not bark from the sidelines. You sound like a coward, you ran away when the tough got going. Why speak from a distance - coward!! All your advice can be better listened to when you are home. Awunyare kutiza strugle!! Wasted brains and talents. You have been silent all these years, why were you not talking? Uyinyoka ephakamisa ikhanda nxa sokuvuthiwe. Awuna jende shamwari! Ugcwele amasimba abolileyo kuphela!! At this point you are not qualified to comment on the struggle to dislodge Mugabe because you ran away when you were most needed. Nobody can trust you now. Now that Mugabe and Zanu are very wounded and on the verge to collapse, you start talking - awunyare muchekadzafa, enda unobatsira vamwe kuvima. Ungasondeli nxa abanye sebejimbile, ubuqutepi abanye bezingela - gwala ndini! Akusisukele lapha! Tibvireyi pano - manyadzi awuna, zirombe!!

  4. MDC SEEMS TO HAVE ALL THESE POLITICAL ANALYSTS-ARMCHAIR TYPE WHO HAVE BEEN GETTING SOME EDUCATION IN THE HOST COUNTRIES FOR FREE AND NOW THEY FEEL THEY HAVE TO PAYBACK FOR THIS HOSPITALITY BY SLAMMING THE GOVT AT EVERY GIVEN OPPORTUNITY.

THEY PUT THE NATION OF ZIMBABWE DOWN AND THEY THINK THEY KNOW MORE THAN THE PEOPLE IN ZIMBABWE WHO ARE STRUGGLING. LIKE TSVANGIRAI THEY WANT THESE GALLANT FEARLESS ZIMBABWEANS TO FIGHT THE BATTLE THEN WHEN THINGS CHANGE THEY WILL COME BACK AS SOME HEROES WHO FOUGHT THE WAR ON THE NET.NO BROTHERS -THE WAR IN FOUGHT ON THE GROUND IN ZIMBABWE-YOU NEED TO BE FOOT SOLDIRES..DEAL WITH POVO EVEYDAY ISSUES.

I HAVE COME ACROSS SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ON MY TRAVELS.THEY DRESS WELL IN DESIGNER SUITS AND WHAT HAVE YOU. THE LOVE FOR DOLLARS IS QUITE EVIDENT…ARE WE HEADING FOR CORRUPTION PART 2?

ANYWAY -THE MAIN ISSUE IS DONT BARK FROM FAR -BE CLOSE TO THE ACTION. YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PEOPLE WHO ARE MOST LIKELY TO ABUSE YOUR POSITIONS WHEN IN POWER BECAUSE OF THE LOVE OF THE DOLLAR AND LACK OF COURAGE TO FIGHT IN TIMES OF DIFFICULTY.THESE ARE THE TIMES WHEN LEADERS RISE UP AND BE COUNTED NOT HIDE BEHIND THE COMPUTER LIKE VIRUSES.

COME OUT IN THE OPEN AND FACE THE ISSUES.EVEN BRIGHT MATONGA HAD TO DO THAT.HE HAD TO GO HOME TO FIGHT THE BATTLE THERE.

THE GVT OF ZIMBABWE TODAY WOULD BE A DINASAUR IF THEY DID NOT HAVE THESE BATTLING QUALITIES.TEN YEARS OF SANCTIONS SHOULD HAVE BROUGHT THE NATION ESP A SMALL ONE LIKE ZIMBABWE TO ITS KNEES A LONG TIME AGO…SO LEARN TO BATTLE FROM THE FRONT.

TSVANGIRAI WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT HAS BEEN A LET DOWN..JUST LIKE YOU NEW BREED OF ANALYSTS FIGHTING FROM A DISTANCE. WHY HIDE IN BOTSWANA? HE IS THE LAST PERSON THE GVT WOULD WANT ASSASSINATED COZ THEN HE BECOMES A LEGEND…BE IT A DEAD ONE.

THIS KIND OF SCENARIO WORRIES ME AS A ZIMBABWEAN.TO BE IN POLITICS YOU NEED COURAGE OTHERWISE KEEP OUT.

  6. Tafadzwa Musekiwa only did what he HAD TO DO. Life is a precious gift and his had to be protected. Maida kuti akufirei (auraiwe nemaCIO) makagara mudzimba dzenyu here? some things just require common sense!
IT IS TIME FOR EVERY ZIMBABWEAN TO PLAY HIS PART IN THE CHANGING OF ZIMBABWE’S FACE AND TO PARTICIPATE IN REBUILDING OUR BELOVED NATION. WHAT HAPPENS TO MUGABE AND HIS BIG SHOTS AFTER GETTING OUT OF POWER IS LESS IMPORTANT THAN THE TASK THAT LIES AHEAD OF US. ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS ACKNOWLEDGE DEFEAT!!!

  9. LETS SECURE TICKETS FOR RUN OFF

Whether registered or not, lets all try to be in Zimbabwe preferably in the rural areas during the runoff.
Our presence will give voters reassuarance and support that they have to do it for the last time.
It is fact that Mugabe still has support in Zimbabwe, with or without rigging Mugabe got more than 40% and Zanu-PF has more than 90 parliamentary seats.May i hail people from Matabeleland for rejecting Mugabe despite massive intimidation and victimisation over the years, this must educate Zanu-PF that intimidation will not work.On the same note may i condemn our mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters from the Karanga,Manyika and Mazezuru who continue to back Mugabe despite dismal failure that is there for everyone to see.

  12. Tafadzwa might have been a good guy before, but the fact that he ran away when he was most needed raises questions. Yes, he was saving his dear life, but thats politics, it’s dirty, if you are a committed revolutionary, then be prepared to die for your people and the cause of the struggle. Tafadzwa lacked on this one. If he was brave, like some say, then why has he been quite for so long, only to emerge today because MDC is on the verge of clinching victory - NO, NO. Brave people do not do that! You contributed in the early stages - fine, but you bolted, you developed cold feet in the face of adversity, did you think it was all going to be rosy all the way to state house - NO. MDC is doing a good job to try and dislodge Zanu, but for leaders to run away and hide when the going gets tough does not make sense. Chematama is also playing that game. He is hiding in Botswana/South Africa pupporting to be doing some diplomacy yet he is away from the very people he wants to lead. Identify with the people you are fighting for and with. Chematama risks loosing support if he continues staying outside saying he is afraid of his life - thats what leadership in politics is about. If you are not prepared to die for the cause and your people, then the kitchen is too hot for you, you better get out!! Chematama go home and galvanize support of the people not of the African leaders and dictators, it’s the people who are going to vote not the foreign leaders you are visiting everyday. You are hiding in Mbeki’s country and you can’t convince him to change his stance towards Mugabe - are you in bed with them behind our backs - wake up Chematama, we out here in Zim need you to identify with us - come home. How come the Bitis, Chamisas, and your deputy are here - come on man!! Tafadzwa go home or keep your mouth shut. If you are Chematama’s son in law then that explains all. By the way - you can not compare Mqabuko with Tafadzwa.

  13. siqoqodo or whatever your name is , whats the diference between your Mqabuko and musekiwa then. They all ran away

Posted by john madziva | May 12, 2008, 10:44 am
  14. Tafadzwa is bullshit, what ever or no matter how much you like him he is a coward. Its true you can not compare him with Mqabuko. Madziva you must debate issues not attack other people. Put your opinions up about your tafadzwa. You talk about jonathan bombing daily news, was daily news MDC? was it even an MDC mouth piece, NO. My piece was about tafadzwa playing coward, put your facts down and lets debate them. It is true, what ever you want to believe Nkomo can not be compared to tafadzwa. Tafadzwa is not even a politician - just learning the ropes (baby steps). If he had stayed, he might be getting there. MDC is there to stay and can not be compared to Zanu. Marombe endai kure munotinyangadza!! Amunyare!!

  17. tafadzwa-coward
    morgan—coward
    biti—coward
    nkomo—-was a coward…but a good man.

Mdc is full of cowards…the only difference now is some shonas have been behaving like prostitutes and selling out too. These shonas are not cowards and thats the only reason mdc is still standing.Nothing happens in matabeleland because the people there are cowards. They dont like to work and develope their part of the country…just blame mugabe for this and that.

The shonas in harare have also picked up this habit-just wanting quick buck without much input.I say shonas because the majority are.In matland the majority are also ndebele.

It amazes me that the name calling is still wide spread.ZIMDAILY is full of this—ndebeles calling shanas zanoids and sometimes amasvina..What is the ethnic represantation in the MDC? I need the information for research purposes.

Like -is it more shona or ndebele or anyother for that matter?

I can see problems in the near future should this madness of a party get into power by default. What i need answered is what is the ethnic represantation?

tafadzwa i told you to be like BRIGHT MATONGA–HE CAME AND LIVED AND DINED WITH THE ENERMY…YOU NEED TO KNOW THE ENERMY LIKE SUN TSU SAYS-STAY CLOSE TO THE ENERMY.

THEN OF CAUSE HE WENT HOME AS A WELL INFORMED YOUNG MAN TO CONTRIBUTE TO HIS COUNTRY.WHILE YOU COWARDS ARE BUSY PUTTING THE COUNTRY DOWN HE IS CONTRIBUTING LIKE SNIPER AND ALL THE OTHER GALLANT PATRIOTS OF ZIMBABWE.

GO BACK HOME AND ADD VALUE TO YOUR COUNTRY TAFADZWA MUPFANHA.siyana nemapenzi aya ve mdc.

or you will be remembered as a coward like morgan…the king of magwara.

  18. I wonder whether Tafadzwa actually ran away or just quit politics and left to pursue other interests; if the latter, he had every right to do so, may be he didnt want to be a career politician. If the former, then people will be excused for being angry with him because people who present themselves for the office of leadership, especially in poltics, must be prapared for a lot of personal sacrifices like was happening to the rest in MDC getting beaten up, some were even killed, being rounded up by the police etc. Of such, a higher degree of courage is expected too. On balance, Tafadzwa may not have necessarily hurt anyone but he must expect the fury of the people when he steps into the political fray as an analyst. There are guys out there who have been clear traitors; Jonathan Moyo is one. And, oh, it is nosnesical to tell people to be in Zimbabwe if they want to comment on the political situation. Who would have ignored the opportunity to get out and go somewhere, where you could work and afford to feed your family, send your children to school and support your suffering folk back home? While those that remained in Zimbabwe should be applauded for voting for change, those that were brave enough to leave folks and country so they could in turn rescue them from imminent demise from corrupt Mugabe and ZANU rule, must be applauded too. There used to be a facility that enabled people living abroad or in exile to vote, if this was afforded them, they could have voted and them too could have been credited with the change. Khulumani, Taurai; the debate goes on……

  20. Leaders are to be servants of the people, Mugabe with his more than six known palaces worth hundreds of millions of US DOLLARS is no servant.

A servant doesn’t let his master starve.

So, Mugabe must be servant of the foreigners, he is letting them steal Zimbabwe’s natural resources at super low prices (his excuse is that a starving nation can hardly demand high prices!).

Who is the real friend of the colonists? Mugabe. Acquiring white farmers land is just a trick, a ruse. His masters know that a little sacrifice goes a long way.

  24. Ghost face - paying 700 million is nothing to cheer about, why did zanu accrue this debt in the first place, - mismanagement and corruption, then you cheer when you are paying back what was not yours in the first place. People are starving, the economy is in tatters and continues to go down. Instead of cheering nonsense, feed the people, stop violence and buying arms to kill your very own - stupid. Yes, cheer Dynamos but do not use it as a political tool, it’s win has nothing to do with the dying people , the same zanu government couldn’t bail them for their trip to Tunnisia, then you want to give that credit to Zanu gov. NO! Clearing debt is no progress, progress is stopping violence, feeding people, freedom, rule of law -(not rule of Zanu), having free and fair elections abd above all respecting the wishes of your people especially when they vote you out, not biting the hand that used to feed you. John Madziva apo wareva, nhasi wataura! Ramba wakadaro, Zim ndeyedu tose, nhamo dzayo dzakanangana nesu tose, dzichapedzwa nesu takabatana. Asi Chematama ngadzokere kumusha, sveku Jubeki zvanyanya, zvanzi ndinoyenda magwana -then mangwana yasvika, ah I will go soon! Why flip flop!! He can not be afraid now after coming this far. Vana Chinamasa still thinks that he is a minister yet cabint was dissolved long back and he even lost the election. Manyadzi ha-ana. Chematamo woye!!

May you explain to us the uneducated blind and stupid lot back in Zim why
1 Morgan failed to garner a mere 51% despite the odds beign against Mugabe(Inflation, unemployment, hostile world media etc)?
2 What is the significance of Morgan running away from his flock?
3 What is the significance of US’s Fraser speaking on behalf of Morgan?
4 Whether its not possible for the 4% separating Morgan and Bob going either way in the run off?

  26. MDC DOES NOT WANT ZIMBABWE TO PROGRESS-UNLESS THEY ARE IN POWER? TRUE OR FALSE?

    LAST WEEK MDC SAID….
NO RE RUN UNLESS WEST COMES TO MONITOR ELECTIONS—-NO RE RUN UNLESS THERE IS A SADDC PEACEKEEPING FORCE—-NO RE RUN THIS AND THAT..NO RE RUN BECAUSE WE DONT HAVE A BUDGET FOR IT..OUR FUNDS HAVE DRIED UP…NO TO RE RUN AS THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE..

THIS WEEK —-YES TO RE-RUN AS LONG AS THERE IS A STRONG AFRICAN OBSERVER TEAM….OOPS WHAT ABOUT THE WEST? MUGABE WILL TARGET THAT..SO CHANGE QUICKLY..YES AFRICANS WILL DO FOR NOW..BUT WHAT IF YOU LOSE? BLAME THE AFRICANS?

MORE RECENTLY - NO TO RERUN WITHIN 3 MONTHS AS ITS AGAINST THE LAW…OOPS THOUGHT YOU HAD NO BUDGET-NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE-BECAUSE MUGABE WANTS MORE TIME TO BEAT UP PEOPLE…WHATS NEXT?

I CHANGE MY UNDERWEAR REGULARLY-ON THE ODD OCCASION I DO IT IN TWO DAYS OR IF NEED BE SEVERAL TIMES A DAY…

I HAVE TO SAY EVEN THAT CANT BEAT THE MDC -WHO ADVISES THIS LOT? WILL THEY TRULLY RUN A COUNTRY GUYS? I MEAN HONESTLY? PUT YOUR NEED FOR CHANGE FOR A MOMENT ON THE SIDE AND THINK ABOUT THIS PARTY…THERE ARE OTHER PARTIES IN ZIMBABWE GUYS…YOU CAN EVEN FORM NEW ONES AND THEY WILL BE BETTER THAN THIS CIRCUS.

NOW THEY HAVE A FOREIGN SPOKESMAN-OR WOMAN IN JENDE FRAZIER…WE ARE DOOMED!!! MCGEE IS NOW RAMBO OR ARNOLD SWARZENNEGER ( SPELL CHECK).WHY CANT THEY STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES? IS IT BECAUSE THE BOSSES HAVE DECIDED THE JOB IS TOO BIG FOR MORGAN?
