Flashback: On a Sunday on 17 February 2008,roughly a month before the harmonised election I went to cover a rally at Stanley Square in Makokoba which was addressed by MDC Secretary General Welshman Ncube and Vice President,Gibson Sibanda.
(Left:MDC Secretary General Welshman Ncube) During his address Ncube said that he would give up politics if he lost his campaign to Thokozani Khupe in Makokoba. The remarks were published on Metro on February 18 and again in the state run The Chronicle.
A month after the elections we have the results. In Makokoba Welshman Ncube polled 2475 and Thokozani Khuphe 4123,Tshinga Dube of ZANU PF 1316.Thokozani Khuphe’s victory represents 50.5% of the vote which is an absolute majority and Ncube got 30.3, a huge 20.2 point difference.
In raw numbers the difference between Khuphe and Ncube is 1648, the widest of all the constituencies in Bulawayo,Khuphe received the second largest number of votes for a winning candidate in Bulawayo. MDC-Tsvangirai’s Agriculture & Lands Secretary, Seiso Moyo who contested Nketa-Emganwini leading the pack.
(Left:MDC-Tsvangirai Vice-President,Thokozani Khuphe)This was not the first time Ncube had said he was contemplating quitting , In 2006 he told CAJ News he would quit politics to concentrate on his legal profession without political “disruptions and interruptions.”
“I am definitely going not to be available on the front line role at the end of this current term. The constitution of the MDC says that I can only stand two terms as the secretary-general and I am serving my last term,” said Ncube then.
Recently the weekly The Independent reported that an arrangement has been made with MDC-Tsvangirai in which MDC -Tsvangirai candidates will step down and let Ncube,Sibanda and Nyathi contest and Ncube will contest in Redcliff in place of Tapera Sengweni and Gibson Sibanda will contest in my home constituency of Mpopoma.
I spoke to the MDC-Tsvangirai candidate for Mpopoma, Cllr.Samuel Sandla Khumalo over the phone yesterday evening and he told me they has been no discussions in his camp about him stepping aside for Sibanda and in any case he said he will not step aside for anyone.
My question is will Ncube stick to his word this time?what about those he said will quit together with him?If not why does he always threaten to quit if he won’t. I tried to get in touch with him to seek his comment,my attempts were futile.

Do you think Mugabe is the only one who wants to cling on to power? Even the likes of Welshman Ncube have the same tendancy.I am afraid this tendancy ruin democracy in Africa.People dont want to accept their failures and also dont want to live up to their words. If you taste the game of politics you wont like to leave it.For democracy’s sake i would like Welshman to fullfil his promise. He must resign so that others can follow suit.Only the late, Edmund Garwe, the then Minister of Education, showed people how it should be done when one fails a nation after his daughter was involved in the leaking of the then ZJC public exam.People naturally forgive such ambassadors of african democracy.Zanu pf has let the nation down and so is the Welshman Ncube’s little Mdc.People have rejected them.
Ncube i C-ten chairo. pfungwa dzavo ndedzekuda kuti MDC iite merge. Morgan akatonga term dzake dzikapera vanoda kuzoita coup pane vanenge vasara kuti ivo vago tonga. Ma candidates e MDC-T ve ku Mpopoma ne Redicliff ngavarambe kubviswa. Inguva yavo ye kupinda mu parliament. I wrote this complaint to the MDC website and am still waiting for their reply. Bringing back these CIO’s is a betrayal to the people.
“If its true that Tsvangirai would once again give these sellouts a chance to destroy him in the name of unity, then I will have the least respect of him over his shortsightedness as a leader. Tsvangirai should know that most of the problems that he has with the regime of Mugabe emanates from this team of Welshman Ncube sellouts. Let me say why
(1) Remember that Ncube et al accosted Tsvangirai to Canada to meet Ari Ben Menashe. He was trapped into saying “eliminate” Mugabe. What did Ncube say in that meeting? Nothing because he knew that he was supposed to say nothing as instructed by CIO. Ari Ben Menashe then at the trial of Tsvangirai for treason always refered to the “good professor”
(2)Remember that the said “good professor” always benefited from the free gifts of Mugabe including the recent tractor gifts. Mugabe’s regime has always bosted about it that even MDC members are beneficiaries of his partisan programme
(3)When they split, Welshman Ncube was on the record as saying that Tsvangirai is undemocratic. No sooner had he said that than had he hired Mutambara to lead the faction. The argument that he wanted to window dress with a Shona leader does not hold because there were other Shona leaders like Gift Chimanikire who wanted to lead the camp
(4)If Tsvangirai is undemocratic and a “mental midget” as was parroted by Mutambara then why are these losers willing to be appointed through undemocratic means. No one chose them. In fact they had chosen other MDC Mutambara candidates for the 3 constituents.
My question is what so important about them? The people of Bulawayo rejected them. There is no evidence that they were the best of their faction. There is Priscila Misihairabwi etc who also fought hard for the MDC to be what it is now and who deserve special treatment in all this.
In summary, I say to hell with these arrangements.”
Power can corrupt.MDC is now nearing a serous test in their practice of democracy.I am afraid!
