Zim ballot boxes ‘tampered with’-SADC Observer

The recount in a number of constituencies in Zimbabwe is futile because ballot boxes have been tampered with, says a South African member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) observer team.

“From what I have seen and experienced in Zimbabwe over the past three days, it is clear that the process of recounting the contested wards from the recent elections is fatally flawed,” South African MP Dianne Kohler-Barnard said on Monday.

The process had been marred by delays, administrative problems and the clear political intent of blaming the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) for all the problems associated with the recount.

“Of particular concern was the evidence of ballot box tampering that I witnessed personally, which points to a concerted effort to rig the election results in order to bring about a Mugabe ‘victory’,” she said in a statement.

Broken seals on ballot boxes

Evidence supporting this view included repeated miscommunication of venue addresses, resulting in party agents and electoral observers frequently posted to the incorrect venue, thus undermining the observation process and contributing to further delays in the recount.

The protocol registers at several counting stations were missing, bringing counting to a halt in a number of areas, while on a number of ballot boxes, the seals holding the keys for the two padlocks on each box had been broken.

One set of ballot boxes was missing a book of voting papers from the presidential election box, although all the other books were locked inside.

A number of other boxes had broken or missing seals, missing keys, and no voting paper books inside.

Loose ballot box seals with serial numbers identical to those on already-sealed boxes were easily available, giving the impression that ballot box seals could easily be replicated, thus opening the way for large-scale vote tampering.

All of theses problems pointed to the fact that a number of ballot boxes had been tampered with, rendering the entire exercise of recounting the contested ballots a futile one, she said.

“Despite these many problems, a number of my colleagues on the SADC observer mission must be commended for the excellent work that they have done under often difficult circumstances.

“There is no doubt that the situation in Zimbabwe is at breaking point as anger over the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s failure to release the results of the presidential election escalates.

“In many instances it was thanks to the work of SADC observers that this anger did not boil over into violent confrontation,” Kohler-Barnard said.

  1. The recount, re-run, run-off, MDC electoral fraud, countless verifications, we have heard it all.

Zanu has tried even throwing the kitchen sink and all its contents at MDC but still the stack reality is they lost, and they lost big.

The big question is so why the hold up????

Simple answer is that it has boiled down to simple bread and butter issues for each and every single person linked directly or indirectly to Zanu Pf. For years an elaborate system of patronage has been built with people assured of their lively hood just for being party members and being drafted into national institutions not on merit, but on loyalty. Some have gained significant business advantages benefiting from cheap loans, direct/indirect subsidies, access to forex at almost zero rates and yes they get the first fuel rations, tractor rations and so forth. Most if not all these businesses will not survive a single month in a dog eat dog environment of equal opportunities.

As individuals most senior Zanu Pf people know no other professional work or ways of earning a legitimate income other than political allowances as ministers/mps, governors etc. Some did not even bother to acquire decent educational qualifications after the bush war and went straight into high political offices, which have cushioned them from what ordinary Zimbos have to go through to survive but all of a sudden they face a real prospect that they might queue for 6,10 or 20 hours with ordinary citizens for basic services such as cooking oil - (I would fight to my last breath if I was in that situation as well ;D ;D ;D ;D)

Added to this problem is the fact that 10 years of hyper hyper inflation has corroded whatever pensions or investments these guys had made. One just need to check how the value of houses have fallen in say Borrowdale in real terms (£s or USD) to realise a real dilemma facing each one of these geriatrics as they try to figure out what really went wrong.

This my dear friends explains all the tomfoolery behind recounts, re-runs, run-offs, Brown this and that. Its all about the selfish interests of a few kleptomaniacs hell burnt on sinking with everyone.

  2. The above statement may be true but not diplomatic. I pray and ask my fellow countrymen and women to fix our hope on the cross and not on the devil “which” is running away with the pulpit.
Your comments Mr Barnard are war mongering. Please be diplomatic and stop inciting. There is life after Mugabe for us to die in a war aganist Mugabe.
Mugabe is going to GO!So dont worry about the stupid election or anything similar which is being stolen.
Winning or Loosing - It is Going.

  3. Imi vanhu imi, do u think the election was meant to bring any change. It was just a formality meant to legitimise mugabe’s dictatorship. neither The presence of observers nor their comments will stop Zanu from stealing the election.

  4. ZANU PF, Zimbabwe hates you.

  5. Jonah A the results out so far in our country shows otherwise. You still have one vote regardless of how much you hate Zimbabwe. I wonder how you arrive at your conclusion. It would help if you enlightened the readers. Only Zimbabweans are aloud to vote. I am not sure what nationality you think the people who voted for Zanu PF are? It could just be wishful thinking on your part. 99 and 97 does not = Zimbabwe hates Zanu PF. Have another go.

  6. T M,

The results are fake. You know it. I know it. Everyone know it. Zanu PF are the traitors of Zimbabwe. If only a small minority (themselves) supports Zanu PF is not the voice of the nation.

Since they have faked the results I am reminding them that fake results does not mean they were elected by the people of Zimbabwe.

For example, if I say “the people of Zimbabwe are good”, it is the truth. Just because a few people in Zimbabwe are evil, it still means the nation is good.

  7. Yes, its true, Zims hate ZanuPf. I suggest Tigere goes back to their formal platform, The Herald and Chronicle to herald and chronicle all the lies they wish to. This is a progressive and democratic platform where we tell Bob and Zanu, you included that we hate you and your filth. MDC forever! You will kill us but you will never kill democracy, you will never kill the spirit that has engulfed every reasoning Zimbabwean. Our time will come.

  8. zanu still has strong support in zim ..otherwise this recount would not be possible…

Now why are you all so sure that mdc did not rig the election? After all they have always been claiming that Zanu pf rigs-so i should think they tried to pre-empt this scenario by rigging too.

Zanu pf is a well organised organisation with structures and systems in place to deal with all this MDC NONSENSE.Dabengwa has spoken now-mission accomplished. Him and simba job welldone otherwise this deluded fool -president of zimbabwe but living in botswana would be president in reality and not in his dreams. No one in their right frame of mind would kill him. Ian smith enjoyed his life in zimbabwe inspite of all the atrocities he commited-thousands butchered at chimoio and nyadzona but scarface RG MUGABE STILL FORGAVE HIM UNTIL GOD PICKED HIM UP FOR JUSTICE.

TSVANGIRAYI - DZOKA KUMBA AND ENJOY THE FREEDOM THAT CAME AT A PRICE TO A LOT OF ZIMBABWEANS WHILE YOU WERE MINING.WHY DO YOU ALWAYS RUN AWAY FROM SITUATIONS REQUIRING MONUMENTOUS COURAGE.SCARFACE R.G.M. FOR ALL HIS FAULTS NEVER ABANDONS A SINKING SHIP-THE ELECTIONS WERE TIGHT THIS TIME- BUT HE REGROUPED HIS TROOPS BECAUSE HE IS A LEADER NOT A COWARD-HE TOOK CHARGE AS DURING CHIMURENGA AND LOOK AT EVENTS NOW.HE HAS BEEN FIGHTING A BATTLE AGAINST THE BIG BOYS FOR TEN YEARS NOW BUT HE IS STILL STANDING.JUST THINK-NO COUNTRY IN THE HISTORY OF INFLATION HAS EVER SUFFERED THIS RATE OF INFLATION BEFORE.. HENCE OUR STOCK MARKET IS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD, THE RESERVE BANK ACTUALLY FUNCTIONS , WE ARE STILL ORGANISING TRADE FAIRS-YES TRADE FAIRS…

THATS WHAT LEADERSHIP IS MR TSVANGIRAI.SCARFACE NEVER ABANDONS HIS PEOPLE-HIS ARMY-HIS MINISTERS-HIS SERVANTS. HE LEADS FROM THE FRONT AND ABSORBS ALL THE CRITISISM AS LONG AS HE KNOWS HE IS SERVING HIS PEOPLE WHO FOUGHT IN ORDER TO BE OWNERS OF LAND AND THEIR NATURAL RESOURCES .

SCARFACE WE SALUTE YOU…TILL THE END OF TIME!!!!

  10. I hope something is done abut the boxes that were tampered with. The recount should stop and the first results that were done should be excepted, as Zanupf has rigged it.

I know that there is power in prayer. God give the SADC wisdom and knowledge on how to handle this issue on the tampered boxes. They must not carry on counting as these results will not be excepted as the boxes were tampered with.

  12. It never stops surprising to realize that at this dire hour of need to bring an end to the nightmare and tyranny in Zimbabwe, one still gets people like Reason Wafawarova and “Open letter to Odinga” idiot who still go out of their way to keep Mugabe in power and extend the suffering of the innocent people of Zimbabwe.
One even wonders whether these idiots have ever gone to school in the first place. Ignorance is the greatest disaster that still bedevils this small bunch of idiots. Think of this:
A degreed nurse in South Africa earns R8000.00 monthly whereas a nurse in Ziombabwe with the same qualifications and experience earns the equivalent of R400.00. What crime did that Zimbo commit, except that the regime just won’t go? Ten years of economic chaos, who will compensate this poor Zimbo nurse for lost potential income of R7500 per month shortfall, which translates to R90000.00 shortfall per year, which ultimately translates to R900000.00 over a period of 10 years? This is a colossal sum for an individual to lose, only to keep an idiotic regime on your shoulders. You suffer. Your family suffers. Your extended family suffers. The nation bleeds. Why? So as to keep Chiwenga and Kasukuwere out of jail? So as to keep ZANOIDS in perpetual wealth? So as to accelerate Zimbabweans’ death rate? Further reduce life expectancy? Increase infant mortality? Condemn the country to perpetual ruin? NO. ISU TARAMBA. NO TO A BLOOD-SUCKING REGIME!!!!!!!!!! CHIHURUMENDE CHEMADZIKIRIRA PASI NACHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHIHURUMENDE CHEMADZURAMOYO PASI NACHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ODINGA IS ONE MAN WE CAN SOLIDLY BANK ON NOW. VIVA ODINGA!!!!!!!! VIVA MORGAN!!!!!!!! VIVA MWANAWASA!!!!!!!!! VIVA ZUMA!!!!!!!!!! 16. If the ballot box is failing to remove the despotic dictator from causing Zimbweans suffrance, then lets embrace the steel event with determination.Afterall,we are already dead.Where are the weapons? We rather die a noble death fighting the tyrant.

  18. WHAT IF THE RESULTS COME OUT AND MDC HAS WON? DOES THAT MEAN ZANU CAN NOW CONSIDER THEM IRRELEVANT SINCE YOU GUYS ARE DISMISSING THEM BEFORE THEY ARE EVEN RELEASED? WILL YOU REJOICE AND SAY WELL WE DID IT AGAINST ALL THE ODDS?

WHAT IF IT IS TRUE THAT YOU CHEATED? WILL YOU ACCEPT THE UOTCOME? THE ONLY OUTCOME FROM DAY ONE OF THE ELECTION WAS MDC VICTORY OTHERWISE THE ELECTION WAS NOT FREE AND FAIR.MDC WINS THEN WE DID IT AGAINST THE ODDS-IS THAT DEMOCRATIC? WHY GO INTO THE ELECTION IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO ACCEPT THE OUTCOME?

IT IS CLEAR THAT ZANU DID NOT RIG..EVEN DURING THIS RECOUNT ITS PROVING TO BE CORRECT THAT NO BALLOTS WERE STUFFED AND IMPREGNATED AS BITI PUT IT. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MDC IS INTRFEERING WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS AND THEY HAVE DISRESPECTED MBEKI WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE ELECTION TO TAKE PLACE AND THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION TOO.THEY DONT SEEM TO HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR SADCC TOO.WHAT ARE WE TO MAKE OF BOTSWANA? THE SO CALLED NEXT PRESIDENT IS HIDING THERE FEARING FOR HIS LIFE-WELL HE NEED NOT FEAR AS NO ZANU PEOPLE WILL TOUCH HIM FOR FEAR OF INFECTION-THAT MDC VIRUS.WANTS YOU GET IT YOU LOSE ALL SENSES-YOU CHANGE STATEMENTS ON A DAILY BASIS AND YOU HEAR THINGS THAT OTHERS DONT.IF MDC THINK ZIMBABWE IS LIKE A WAR ZONE THEN WE SHOULD BE WORRIED. I EXPERIENCED THE WAR BEFORE INDEPENDENCE-EVEN GUKURAHUNDI. IF THIS IS THEIR IDEA OF A WAR ZONE GOD BLESS THEM WHEN WAR DOES BREAK OUT- WITH A COMMANDER IN CHIEF WHO HIDES IN BOTSWANA AND WANTS TO RETURN WHEN THE ‘WAR’ IS OVER AS A HERO WITH THOUSANDS OF FLAG WAVING MDC SUPPORTERS AND OLD FARMERS ON THEIR TRACTORS FIRING MACHINE GUNS IN THE AIR.

WELCOME BACK FROM HIDING PRESIDENT TSVANGIRAI.
